Elegy began as the final scene in Separations, a much larger work for modern dance that explored a life cycle from birth to death. As might be expected from the title, its subject matter is death. Though the slowly unfolded melody and texture are somewhat melancholic, at last this final separation is found to be not an end, but rather the true beginning.
