A recording of Four Songs from The Caucasian Chalk Circle has been posted on UMKC Conservatory’s InstantEncore page as part of the Best of Spring 2010 Performances playlist. The performance is by Katherine Crawford, from the February 2010 Composers Guild concert.

“Reliquary”

Reliquary, the sound art installation Paul Rudy and I did for the UMKC Friends of the Library annual celebration, was a resounding success. Here are a few links to photos and such:

The May 23 edition of KCUR’s KC Currents, featuring an interview with Sharon Bostick, Paul Rudy, and myself about the UMKC library robot and “Reliquary” (around time 17:35-29:00 in the broadcast). Also with a short writeup and edited audio here.

Meet the Robot

Yes, you read that right. I am working with Paul Rudy on an installation for the UMKC Friends of the Library, to be presented May 12 at the Friends’ 45th annual celebration.

Here’s a short description I wrote of what we’re doing…

This installation uses sound and light to explore the relationship between physical objects and the non-physical ideas they represent. It is an interactive meditation on the intersection of old and new technologies that invites participation–as the viewer touches, moves, and interacts with books on a shelf, new sounds and images present new avenues for reflection on what is truly enduring, and what is ephemeral.

November/December performances

Sustinui Te will receive two performances in November, with soprano Katie Woolf singing and me at the computer. The first will be Thursday, November 5, at the Electronic Music Midwest festival hosted by Kansas City Kansas Community College. The concert is free, and will begin at 7:30pm. The second will be at a KcEMA fundraising event on November 9.

Four songs from The Caucasian Chalk Circle are scheduled for their concert premiere by mezzo-soprano Katherine Crawford on KcEMA‘s December 5 program, at La Esquina in Kansas City.

Rondo alla Smirk will be premiered December 14 by violinist Piotr Szewczyk as part of his second Violin Futura program. More details when I have them.
